An article with language such as "Taco-Bell-fart-in-a-suit known as Ted Cruz" is obviously not trying to be objective. Studies have not found that more internet access improves academic performance, since obviously kids will use it for lots of non-academic things. A study on Italy is at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S030859612....
True, this article does not have a professional tone. So pick any of the other dozen articles that exist on this.
Whatever the tone of the article, the underlying fact remains that his reasons are not objective, either - they are political. He wants to ensure kids are exposed to right-wing rhetoric.

Maybe but the tone distracts from the content.
Maybe we can replace the link with an article that has more supporting data one way or another, and doesn’t sound like an angry comment on Reddit?

I would never dream of asking TechDirt (or anyone) to change their tone, or any such. If that's what you mean by tone policing.
But HN stories are sometimes redirected to a more original source, etc. So it's not unprecedented to redirect a link to a higher quality source.
That's where my intent was coming from, if it wasn't clear.
